What is a recall?
When a manufacturer or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) determines that a vehicle creates an unreasonable risk to safety or fails to meet minimum safety standards, the manufacturer is required to fix that vehicle at no cost to the owner. That can be done by repairing it, replacing it, offering a refund (for equipment) or, in rare cases, repurchasing the car.
What should I do if my vehicle is included in this recall?
If your vehicle is included in this recall, it is very important that you get it fixed as soon as possible given the potential danger to you and your passengers if it is not addressed. You should receive a separate letter in the mail from the vehicle manufacturer, notifying you of the recall and explaining when the remedy will be available, whom to contact to repair your vehicle, and to remind you that the repair will be done at no charge to you. If you believe your vehicle is included in the recall, but you do not receive a letter in the mail from the vehicle manufacturer, please call NHTSA's Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236, or contact your vehicle manufacturer or dealership.
Thank you for your attention to this important safety matter and for your commitment to helping save lives on America's roadways.
Thank you,

Where there’s smoke…there’s fire!

Your Center for Auto Safety is turning up the heat on Hyundai, Kia, and the U.S. Department of Transportation—and they are feeling it. Following our recent letter asking for a Congressional investigation into Kia and Hyundai car fires, news media from across the country (and internationally) have picked up the story and are running with it. From Denver to Detroit and from  California to Canada we want to keep pushing these manufacturers—and NHTSA to fix these cars before the next fire. But instead of fixing it, the industry has done what it always does—hire more DC insiders. This time, one of Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s closest aides is going to work for the Association of Global Automakers, where Kia and Hyundai are members. And let’s not forget that Secretary of Transportation Elaine Chao’s husband…is none other than that same Senator McConnell.
As an independent, member-driven organization, we won’t back down from anyone—but we need your help to be sure all consumers can have a seat at the table instead of allowing Washington to put industry interests first and safety last. Please join the Center’s efforts today with an annual membership contribution of $48—less than $5 a month! Not only will you help us stand up for all drivers, passengers, and pedestrians, but as a member you can receive our unique monthly Safety Tune-Up Report which provides customized safety information about your car to your in-box, and access to The Car Book 2019—online or paper edition. Help us keep speaking out and fighting fires with fire!
