BOSTON —The vehicle that slammed into a building in downtown Boston was being driven by an Uber driver who had a passenger onboard at the time of the crash.

An SUV went straight through a brick building in the Beacon Hill section of Boston at Myrtle and Grove Streets. 

Witnesses said the Toyota RAV4 was speeding up Grove Street, possibly after being invovled in a hit and run on Cambridge Street. 

Boston EMS said two people were inside the car and were taken to Massachusetts General Hospital. 

The driver's wife, who identified the driver as Jean Caillot, told Newscenter 5's Shaun Chaiyabhatthat her husband has been an Uber driver for three years and that he was driving with a passenger onboard. Uber confirmed this information and said they have reached out to Caillot. 

It is unclear why Caillot drove into the building at this time. He suffered minor injuries, but no broken bones from the crash. 

The passenger suffered non-life-threatening injuries. 

Nobody was inside the apartment unit at the time of the crash. The homeowner said she's glad nobody was home. Inspectional Services examined the home and deemed it livable.

Bought a used 2012 Toyota Rav 4 with over 50K miles on it in December 2014. When decelerating, usually in preparation to slow down or stop, and usually at low speed, the engine will suddenly rev very high and pressing the brake pedal often cannot stop the forward movement immediately. Have to force the transmission out of drive into neutral. I have an appointment with the local Toyota dealership tomorrow. Am reading that this is not an uncommon problem with several Toyota models, but specifically the Rav 4. This is a very dangerous malfunction and could result in serious accident if the driver cannot overcome the acceleration quickly. Sounds like the Toyota dealerships are unable to diagnose or fix the problem and are foisting it off on driver error, floor mats, etc. I'm going to take a bath if I have to sell the car, but will have to if the problem is not fixed. Surely Toyota has figured out the repair since 2012?

Alexander Odgers-McGuire, 19, of Concord, was traveling south in a Toyota Rav4 at an unknown speed when his vehicle crossed over the double yellow lines into the northbound lane, officers said.

I was driving a 2012 Prius C with 57,000 miles on it. As I was entering a parking space at 2-5 mph and braking to stop there was a sudden acceleration that I couldn't stop with the brakes. Car climbed a 5 ft. berm, and stopped only when front wheels were suspended over the adjacent lot. The mats were not involved and if the berm were not there I would have hit something in the other lot. Notified a dealer and Toyota headquarters but I'm not expecting anything positive after reading the other cases. THIS CAR IS DANGEROUS!!!! Someone will die.

I had purchased a brand new 2004 ES 330 Lexus from San Francisco Bay Area in July 2004. I drove it to Las Vegas, NV. In April 1, of 2005 around 2:00 PM I was in the center lane, my car had a tiny jerk, I felt I was about to hit the car in front of me. I decided to go to the right lane where there was no car, as I approached the red light, I had my foot on the brake, it was almost a complete stop, as my car took off going through the red light. I kept pushing on the brake, but the brake was stuck, I could hear the accelerator revving, I pushed on it, but was stuck as well. The car really took off, I hold on to the wheel as I thought I was going to run over people. The right side of the car was on the sidewalk, going over the rocks and shrubs, then was on the road going very erratically. I was holding on the wheel so hard and screaming, It felt like the speed was over 100 because I could not hold on to the wheel any longer, then it went over the median and the other side of the road hitting an SUV head on. The dashboard fell on my legs and crushed both legs severely. The airbag hit my chest cause lots of bruising and shortness of breath. Both my car and the SUV were totaled.

Right after the accident I told friends that I want the brake to be checked because I had no brake. My car was checked by Lexus and I was told the brake was fine. In 2010 I found out about Toyota and Lexus sudden unintended acceleration when Highway patrol officer and three member of his family died in a Lexus in San Diego freeway.

SONOMA -- One person was killed and three others were injured in a collision involving three motorcycles and a SUV on Saturday along Highway 1 in Sonoma County, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Officers responded to a report of a collision involving a car and a motorcycle about 12:30 p.m. in the northbound lane of Highway 1 near the Fort Ross State Historic Park in Sonoma County.

Alexander Odgers-McGuire, 19, of Concord, was traveling south in a Toyota Rav4 at an unknown speed when his vehicle crossed over the double yellow lines into the northbound lane, officers said.

As his car entered the lane, it struck the left leg of 55-year-old Oakland resident Robert Rodgers, who was riding a Ducati motorcycle, officers said.

The Toyota continued traveling south in the northbound lane and collided head-on with two other motorcyclists, one ridden by Phillip Telesforo, 54, of Rohnert Park, and another ridden by an unidentified man, according to the CHP.

After hitting the motorcycles, the Toyota continued south before running off the roadway and coming to a rest about 35 feet from the highway.

CHP officers said one motorcyclist was declared dead at the scene, and Rodgers and Telesforo were taken by helicopter to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital with major injuries.

Odgers-McGuire suffered minor injuries and was transported by ambulance to Santa Rosa Memorial.
The cause of the collision is still under investigation, but CHP officers say they do not believe drugs and alcohol are a factor.

The identity of the man who died will be released pending notification of next of kin.

The roadway was cleared shortly after 7 p.m.

HACKENSACK, N.J. — An SUV driver swerving to avoid striking another vehicle on a highway on Friday hit a snowbank along a guardrail and catapulted 60 feet off a bridge. Incredibly, authorities say, the vehicle landed upright and the two occupants suffered only minor injuries.

 

The Toyota Rav4 was headed east on Interstate 80 when the accident occurred Friday morning in Hackensack, police said.

The driver, Elizabeth Wolthoff, veered sideways after her vehicle was cut off, officials said. The SUV then hit a snowbank that formed after plows had pushed excess snow up against the guardrail.

The SUV flew off the bridge and landed upright beneath the Hackensack River bridge, missing the river by about 40 feet. Wolthoff and her passenger, Rebecca Winslow, called 911.

"The snowbank served almost as a ramp," Hackensack Police Director Michael Mordaga told The Record newspaper. "They're very lucky the way the vehicle landed."

State Police Sgt. 1st Class Gregory Williams said the women, both from Bergenfield, were wearing their seat belts.

Firefighter Michael Thomasey, one of about 20 firefighters who responded to the accident, told the newspaper that Winslow asked where she was and remembered the crash.

"I told her: 'You're in Hackensack. Don't worry. We're here. We'll get you out of the car,'" he said. "'Just sit tight. We're going to work for a few minutes. It's going to be noisy. We're going to get you out of here.'"

Firefighters used the Jaws of Life to remove the passenger-side door. They slid Winslow out feet-first and eventually pulled Wolthoff out from underneath the steering wheel, Thomasey said. Both women complained of neck and back pain and were taken to a hospital.

"It's just shocking that you could fall that far in a car and be awake when everybody gets there, telling us what hurts," Thomasey said.
