EAST ORANGE — Funerals for the two 21-year-old women killed in a single-vehicle crash off of Route 3 in Clifton Friday have been set for this week and next week.
Tashanique "Zoey" Hawkins, of Elizabeth, will have a noon service Friday at Smith Funeral Home, 455 North Broad St., Elizabeth. Carlene Maynard, of East Orange, will have a 10 a.m. funeral service Aug. 14 at Christ Episcopal Church at 422 Main St., East Orange.
At about 3:30 a.m. on July 31, a 20-year-old East Orange woman driving a 2007 Toyota Camry with four passengers lost control of the vehicle for an unknown reason while on the Route 3 exit ramp to Valley Road, Clifton police Sgt. Michael Bienkowski has said. The vehicle left the roadway, struck a utility pole and rolled over, he said.
The driver and two other female passengers were taken to St. Joseph's Medical Center for non-life threatening injuries, he said. Both Hawkins and Maynard were killed in the crash.

Hawkins' viewing will take place at 10 a.m. Friday. Maynard's viewing will take place an hour before her funeral service on Aug. 14.
Hawkins leaves behind her 10-month-old son, Basim Oma'ri; her parents, Kim and Davonn; and four siblings. Maynard, who recently turned 21, is survived by her parents, Marilyn and Odley; five siblings; and "thousands of friends and family," according to a statement on her Gofundme.com page.
Gofundme.com pages have been set up for both Hawkins and Maynard following their deaths. Each page has raised several thousand dollars as of Thursday morning.
"Tashanique was very popular because of her mild, soft, humble and fun loving spirit," according to a statement on Hawkins' Gofundme.com page.
"Carlene was a fun, loving, and caring individual," according to a statement on Maynard's Gofundme.com page. "Every day of her life was filled excitement, adventure, and laughter. Her radiant smile and style epitomized the phrase 'glitz and glam.'"
Clifton police have not yet released the names of the driver or the other passengers involved in the crash. Detective Sgt. Robert Bracken said Tuesday morning charges were not expected to be filed at this time in connection with the crash.
Bracken has not yet provided more information on the circumstances of the crash, saying the matter was still under investigation. He previously said several people were ejected from the vehicle.

2007 Toyota Camry: Toyota Camry killed 2 and injured 2

Koua Fong Lee was driving an out-of-control 2007 Toyota Camry and went to prison - see categories on right side.

Other owners of 2007 Toyota Camry vehicles stepped forward to testify of similar experiences.

The jury believed Koua Fong Lee was wrongfully imprisoned and that TOYOTA was at fault.

As Trudy Baltazar commented below, check out addition articles regarding the Jean Bookout/Barbara Schwarz Oklahoma trial, also on the right side. ]

When the jury awarded $$$, TOYOTA rushed to settle with a Confidentiality Agreement...do you have to wonder why?

No IDs yet in fatal Route 3 crash in Clifton, cops say

August 01, 2015'

CLIFTON — Police say they won't be releasing the identities of those involved in the fatal crash on the Route 3 exit ramp to Valley Road Friday until after the weekend.

The identities of those involved in the early Friday morning crash, including the two 21-year-old women who were killed, as well as the circumstances of the crash are being withheld until Monday to make sure the women's families have been notified, Clifton police Detective Sgt. Robert Bracken said Saturday morning.

At about 3:30 a.m. Friday, a 20-year-old East Orange woman driving a 2007 Toyota Camry with four passengers lost control of the vehicle for an unknown reason while on the Route 3 exit ramp to Valley Road, Sgt. Michael Bienkowski said in a news release. The vehicle left the roadway, struck a utility pole and rolled over, he said.

Two passengers — an East Orange woman and an Elizabeth woman — were killed in the crash, Bienkowski said. The driver and two other female passengers were taken to St. Joseph's Medical Center for non-life threatening injuries, he said.

Bracken previously said several people were ejected from the vehicle.

The crash remains under investigation by the Clifton Police Department Traffic Unit and the Passaic County Prosecutor's Office.

Anyone with more information about the crash can contact the Clifton Police Department's Traffic Unit at 973-470-5905 or the prosecutor's office at 973-837-7641.

Sounds like this may be another case of sudden unintended acceleration (SUA). According to attorney Beasley (who handled the case in Oklahoma of Bookout vs. Toyota where the Toyota was found upside down in a pond with floor mats in the trunk), there were approx. 60,000 complaints filed with toyota on SUA; however, toyota filed most of the complaints under "floor mat issue". So when one (such as NHTSA) goes to check how many complaints were filed for SUA, it doesn't appear to be all that many.

The 62-year-old female driver of the car wasn’t seriously injured, but appeared rattled.

Police are asking witnesses to come forward. At this point, no charges have been laid.

The area was closed to traffic for several hours, but all roads have since reopened.
