BMW says the problem dates back to an incident in 2009, when a 2007 BMW X5 SAV had heat-related engine room damage, but the automaker could not determine what caused the problem.
Another report came later in 2009 to a 2006 BMW 3 Series, which suffered from the same engine failure. Therefore, BMW monitored the field for further problems. Other reports came in 2010 about different models and years, all with heat-related damage to the engine compartments.
The automaker launched a parts return program for 2005-2008, 3 Series, 5 Series, X3 SAVs and X5 SAVs. The tests were conducted between 2011 and 2012. The engineers found that a localized smoldering of the PCV valve heaters caused the overheating because the heaters were old and degrading.
In 2016, Canadian reports were received and a survey found that the problem typically occurred between two and eight years of vehicle age. BMW decided to call for a recall in Canada, followed by a recall in the US.
Although there may be fires, according to BMW, there are no reports of accidents or injuries related to the heaters.
The recall will begin on December 18, 2017, when dealers will begin to replace the PCV valve heaters.
