UPDATED: Police seek information on Toyota Prius ‘driving behavior’ prior to crash that resulted in multiple injuries

John Kitzhaber's son Logan admits having beer before crash

PORTLAND, Ore. — Court records show the 18-year-old son of former Oregon Gov. John Kitzhaber admitted drinking a beer before crashing his car along the Oregon Coast.
A police affidavit says Logan Kitzhaber told a paramedic he had a beer before heading toward Lincoln City. Kitzhaber also admitted to police that he had smoked marijuana the night before the crash.
He reported not knowing the cause of the Monday crash.
It's unclear exactly when he consumed the beer, and authorities say they're still working to determine whether Kitzhaber will face charges.
Oregon State Police served a warrant for a blood draw and urine sample taken from Kitzhaber at Oregon Health & Science University.
Kitzhaber sustained serious injuries after police said he sideswiped a motorhome and crashed on Highway 101 near Lincoln City on the Fourth of July.
He was driving a 2008 Toyota Prius south on Highway 101 near Devil's Lake Road when the car crossed the center line and sideswiped a 1988 motorhome, according to preliminary investigative reports from Oregon State Police.
Kitzhaber was taken by air ambulance to Oregon Health and Science University. Oregon State Police initially said Kitzhaber's injuries were life-threatening, but later said he was seriously injured. He was released from the hospital.
The driver and passenger of the mobile home, Stanley Lyckman, 67, and Martha Lyckman, 63, both of Port Angeles, Washington, sustained injuries that were not life-threatening and were taken to North Lincoln Hospital.
Highway 101 was closed for an hour after the crash. Anyone who witnessed the crash or the driving behavior of the Prius was asked to call OSP at 503-375-3555.
Former Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber owns the 2008 Prius that was in the crash, OSP confirmed.
Logan is John Kitzhaber's only son, whom he had with his second wife, Sharon LaCroix.
Kitzhaber released a statement Tuesday afternoon, confirming that Logan has been released from OHSU.
"He's doing well and recovering at home," Kitzhaber said. "Both Sharon and I appreciate the outpouring of support."

Gov. Kitzhaber's son Logan Kitzhaber, who was involved in wreck, home recovering from injuries

LINCOLN CITY, Ore. – Oregon State Police continue to investigate a two-vehicle crash that occurred yesterday afternoon, Monday, July 4, on U.S. Highway 101 and left a Portland man seriously injured.
About 1:30 p.m., OSP troopers and emergency medical personnel responded to the report of a crash involving two vehicles on the highway near Devils Lake Road, just north of Lincoln City.
According to an OSP news release, “Preliminary investigation revealed that a 2008 Toyota Prius was traveling southbound on Highway 101 when it crossed the centerline, sideswiping a northbound 1988 motorhome. After the impact, the motorhome rolled onto its side and the Toyota came to rest on the shoulder.”
First responders extricated the Prius driver, Logan G. Kitzhaber, 18, of Portland, from his vehicle. He was then transported to Oregon Health & Science University by helicopter for serious injuries. As of today, Tuesday, July 5, OSP reports Kitzhaber was released from the hospital. (OSP notes that an earlier news release indicated Kitzhaber had suffered life-threatening injuries, but the agency later learned the injuries were more accurately described as “serious.”)

The motorhome driver, Stanley V. Lyckman, 67, of Port Angeles, Washington was transported by ambulance to North Lincoln Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. His passenger, Martha Lyckman, 63, also of Port Angeles was also taken to North Lincoln Hospital for minor injuries.

U.S. Highway 101 was closed completely for one hour then opened to one lane with intermittent closures for over an hour following the wreck. OSP was assisted by the Oregon Department of Transportation, Lincoln City Police, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office and North Lincoln Fire and Rescue.
The OSP news release adds, “OSP is seeking any persons who may have witnessed the Toyota Prius and its driving behavior prior to the crash to call OSP at 503-375-3555. This is an ongoing investigation. No further information to be released at this time.”
Logan Kitzhaber is son of former Oregon Gov. John Kitzhaber and his second wife, Sharon Lacroix Kitzhaber, who owns a condominium in Neskowin.
This morning, Gov. Kitzhaber released the following statement through OHSU:
“Logan has been treated and released from OHSU. He’s doing well and recovering at home. Both Sharon and I appreciate the outpouring of support. ”
