ANN ARBOR, MI - Anthony Mack and his fellow landscapers, one holding an ice pack to his shoulder, shook their heads as they eyed a silver Ford Focus embedded in the wall of a condominium south of downtown Ann Arbor on the afternoon of Tuesday, July 18.
The group of workers from A & D Home Services, who watched the vehicle careen into the building, had hoped to rescue the driver, said Mack, 40, of Belleville.
Instead, the would-be rescuers found a gruesome scene and a life they couldn't save.
"I broke down in tears," Mack said. "You don't want to see that for anybody."

Police were investigating the fatal crash reported about noon Tuesday at 1901 Washtenaw Avenue, said Ann Arbor police Sgt. William Clock.
A 35-year-old Ypsilanti man was driving southbound on Washtenaw Avenue when the vehicle crossed the centerline, struck a support pole on the three-condo home, and came to a stop in a living room, Clock said.
The unit was vacant and the exact cause of the crash was not immediately known.
Mack was weeding the lawn across the street about noon Tuesday when he heard tires squealing and saw a vehicle in the far right lane cross the centerline, drive off the road and strike the home, he said.
The crash occurred in the 1900 block of Washtenaw Road in Ann Arbor around noon Tuesday, July 18.

"We went over to assist with the accident," Mack said. "We couldn't get in through any side windows so we kicked the door in to see if we could assist and there was nothing we could do ... They're gone."
After finding the driver deceased, the group of landscapers called police, he said.
