DEDHAM >> A Sharon woman has been convicted of being drunk when she backed her car out of a driveway and struck and killed a pregnant woman on the sidewalk.

Karen Blau faces at least five years in prison at sentencing in Norfolk Superior Court on Friday, following her conviction Wednesday on charges including motor vehicle manslaughter while intoxicated.

Authorities say 35-year-old Joanne White was walking on a sidewalk in Stoughton on July 21, 2013 with her 11-year-old son when she was struck by Blau's vehicle as it backed out of a driveway on the other side of the street.

Prosecutors say White, who was about three months pregnant, yelled out a warning to her son before she was struck. He was not hurt.

Blau's attorney said his client's car accelerated suddenly.

Drugged and drunk driving could be tough to prove in case of Stoughton fatal pedestrian accident

Blau identified herself to police as the driver of the brown Buick that sped out of control in reverse across the street and onto the sidewalk, a police report filed in Stoughton District Court said.
